James does not come to firearms law from a distance. As he explains in his bio video, he “grew up around guns” his whole life and comes from a family where many served in the military. Those early experiences shaped how he sees his work today: fighting for people who need protection and for the rights that allow them to defend themselves.
Why James Focuses On Firearms & Self-Defense Cases
In his own words, the choice to focus on firearms felt natural. James talks about thinking of the people who protect themselves or their families, only to find themselves “being persecuted by the government.” That shift from defender to defendant drives him.
He grew up watching family members live out a simple principle: fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. In the video, he says his family “instilled in me the principle of fighting for those who need to be protected.” Today, he applies that same principle in courtrooms across Florida.
James has served as a prosecutor in Escambia & Seminole County, Florida. He brings that background into every case at The Firearm Firm. He understands how the government builds a case and uses that knowledge to defend people who used a firearm in self-defense and now face criminal charges. Over the years, he has represented clients in state & federal court, from misdemeanors to serious felonies, including violent crimes, felonies punishable by life, and murder.
“The Worst Day Of Their Life” – How He Sees His Clients
For many of our clients, calling us at The Firearm Firm comes after the worst day they have ever had. James never loses sight of that. In the video, he describes the people he represents as “someone who is facing the worst day of their life… they just got put in a situation where they had to defend themselves.”
He understands that many gun owners believed the government would stand with them after a justified use of force. Instead, they often feel shocked to find the government “coming after them,” threatening jail time, prison, or even a life sentence. James steps into that gap, working to make sure those who do not deserve to go to jail do not end up there.
He explains that what drives him is being able “to provide them confidence and protection through the process, help them go through it, understand it.” That focus on guiding, explaining, & standing between clients and the power of the state is at the heart of how he practices law.
From The Range To The Courtroom
James does not only talk about firearms in a legal sense. He also understands how people actually train, carry, & use guns. In 2017, he became an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor and an NRA Range Safety Officer. He now holds instructor certifications in:
- Basic pistol
- Concealed carry
- Personal protection inside the home
- Personal protection outside the home
Because of this background, he knows what it feels like to stand on the range, make decisions under pressure, and think through real-world self-defense scenarios. That practical knowledge helps him understand what clients experienced in the moments before a shot, not just what appears in a police report.
James also writes & teaches about the laws that govern those moments. He co-authored Florida Gun Law: Armed and Educated, now in its third edition, and co-authored The Ongoing Gun Control Debate, published by Thomas Reuter/Aspatore. Across Florida, he lectures on Self-Defense, Justifiable Use of Force, Castle Doctrine, and Stand Your Ground, speaking both to gun owners and to other attorneys.
Teaching Other Lawyers & Leading In The Courtroom
Inside the courtroom, James has built a reputation as a strong trial lawyer. He has trained attorneys across the country on jury selection, cross-examination, and trial strategy in criminal trials. His published work covers topics such as DUI defense, jury selection, plea bargaining, cross-examination, & trial strategy.
He holds Board Certification in DUI Defense from the National College of DUI Defense, one of only four attorneys in Florida with that certification. His peers & professional organizations have recognized his work with honors that include an “AV” rating from Martindale-Hubbell since 2019, Super Lawyers Rising Star listings from 2013–2017, inclusion in Super Lawyers 2021, multiple client distinction awards, and recognition among Central Florida’s Top 100 Trial Lawyers and Florida’s Top 40 Under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers. He has also been featured as one of Central Florida’s Legal Elite by Orlando Style Magazine, included in Strathmore Who’s Who, and received Avvo’s 2017 Client Choice Award.

He belongs to the NRA, Florida Carry, National Association for Gun Rights, Second Amendment Foundation, Florida Gun Rights, Firearms Policy Coalition, & Florida Sports Shooting Association.
He also serves as a Florida statewide firearm attorney for U.S. LawShield, the Firearm Owner’s Protection Program. In that role, he and his partner, David S. Katz, represent more than 45,000 gun owners throughout Florida in firearm-related matters. That volume of real cases gives him daily insight into how police, prosecutors, & courts handle gun owners after self-defense incidents.
James holds admissions to practice in the Florida and Tennessee State Bars, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Middle, & Southern Districts of Florida, as well as the Southern District of Texas. This broad admission profile allows him to navigate complex state & federal issues that can arise in firearm and self-defense matters.
